Each year, September 30 marks both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
Skate Canada New Brunswick will be closed on this day so that we take time to reflect on and commemorate the history and legacy of Indigenous people of Canada.
As we pay tribute to the profound contributions and rich history of Indigenous peoples, we encourage you to continue your support towards reconciliation, here are some ways:
- C & S Steps - video: the decolonizing of our terminology
- Kairos Blanket Exercise (Kairos Blanket Exercise)
- Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action 87 to 91 (Sports and reconciliation)
- The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation houses a collection of educational resources.
- New Brunswick Public Libraries: The libraries’ Indigenous collection contains materials published by Indigenous authors, in Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik-Peskotomuhkati, and on First Nations issues.
- App: Reconciliation: A Starting Point is a reference tool for learning about Indigenous people of Canada, including key historical events and examples of reconciliation initiatives.
