2020 Skate Canada Challenge

After a week of competition at the 2020 Skate Canada Challenge in Edmonton Alberta, nine New Brunswick skaters have returned to their home province.

In the Pre-Novice Women category, Malyka Keeley from the Campbellton Figure Skating Club took the silver medal with a total score of 97.17 and also achieving a personal best in her free program. Two other skaters from New Brunswick were amongst the 45 top Canadian skaters. Olivia Landry from the Riverview Skating Club finished 32nd with a total score of 74.16 and a personal best in her short program. Camryn Baker of the Quispamsis Figure Skating Club finished in 44th position with a total score of 58.46.

New Brunswick had 2 skaters in the Pre-Novice Men category. Tyler Bishop from the Quispamsis Figure Skating Club finished 14th with a total score of 71.85, a personal best. Brennan Webb from the Mariposa Moncton Skating Club finished 16th while scoring 68.24. Webb finished with personal best scores in both of his programs.

In the Novice Women category, Melissa Fong from the Quispamsis Figure Skating Club was the only skater representing New Brunswick out of the 43 skaters. Fong finished in 41st place with a total score of 74.74.

Coming back from an injury, and the only skater from New Brunswick in the Senior Women category, Lissa Anne McGaghey finished in 20th place with a total score of 116.59. This was McGaghey’s first year in the Senior Women category. Last year, McGaghey finished in 16th in Junior Women as she skated in her home province during the national championships held in Saint John NB.

Estelle LeBlanc and Alex Léger were the sole New Brunswick entry in Senior Dance. The couple from the Dieppe Gold Blades Skating Club in finished in 6th place with a total score of 84.91 and achieved a personal best in their free dance.

The Senior Dance couple received a bye to compete at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships being held from January 13th to the 19th 2020 at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.
