Judges, evaluators and technical officials are volunteers that assess skaters in competition and test situations. Typically former skaters, judges, evaluators and technical officials must attend clinics, trial judge and pass exam(s) at each level. Once certified, officials continue to train and improve their skills with regular training sessions and assessments. Each discipline of skating, singles, pair, dance and synchronized skating requires individualized training. Evaluators assess skaters at test days in the disciplines of dance, skating skill and free skating. There are 6 different levels of StarSkate tests for each discipline, preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver and gold. Judges assess skaters at competitions in the disciplines of singles, pairs, dance and synchronized skating. Training and promotions for each discipline is done separately allowing judges to progress at their own pace. There are 8 different levels of judging qualifications, primary, juvenile, novice, senior, challenge, Canadian, international and ISU. Judges also assess competitive tests. Technical Specialists and Technical controllers are responsible for the correct identification of elements and levels of difficulty of these elements when attempted by skaters and teams in competition. Just like judges and evaluators, technical officials are continually training and improving their skills. New Brunswick has a history of successful judges at the section, national and international level. For more information on how you can get involved, visit the How to Get Started section.
